Big Brother 07 is over, and with it go our dreams of a victory that would have set the world of BB on it's head. Alas, it wasn't to be. Zach lost by, (apparently), an insane 2% to the popular favourite, Aleisha.
As sad as I am that Zach lost, I'm not as offended as I would have been if he had lost to Billy or Travis. If he had to lose to anyone, I'm glad it was Aleisha, at least it was a win for the chicks.
There is a bit of controversy this morning about the voting system. It took them all a dogs age to work out who the winner actually was and many fans have registered zero confidence in Legion Interactive, the people who collate the votes, as they've stuffed it up in the past and there are a few questions being asked this time around too.
Apparently, some people are claiming their votes to save for Zach, weren't registering, others who were sms'ing, were getting messages from Legion as late as 2am this morning telling them the lines had closed (well d'uh!) and telling them to watch the daily show (which is no more) or go to the official website. It appears there definitely were bugs in the system, but it's all over and a winner was crowned.
Congratulations to Aleisha and her massive fan base that helped her over the line!
Last nights finale show was the WORST one I think I've ever suffered through. With no offence to people who work on the show (one of whom reads this blog and has given me many insider tips that I greatly appreciate and I adore this person dearly) I can't remember ever seeing such a disjointed, shambles of a live production, EVER!
It started off well enough, Zach and Aleisha looked adorable and Gretel was stylish and poised, I loved that the two finalists got to watch the show unfold, I loved the news headlines, I loved the walk down memory lane with all the housemates and I bawled like a blubbering baby when Zach and Aleisha were reunited with their parents.
BUT,
The pantomime?? WTF was THAT about??? I really think they need to scrap the whole HM performance fiasco, seriously, it's just cringeworthy and I was embarrassed for them. There were a few funny parts, granted, but it smacked of a" Westfields center stage, school holidays free show". It was lame!!!
The whole show seemed to be aimed squarely at an 8-14 year old demographic and I can't for the life of me understand why. Surely these are NOT the people who are voting! I know they had to tone it down after last years Turkey Slap drama, but they've gone soooo far the other way the show may as well have been produced by Hillsong for the Christian bible belt!!! What the hell is going on????
The other thing that pissed me, and everyone I was with, off- The time it took to tally the votes. For the sake of fuck! They knew the vote would be close, it's been close for the last two weeks, they knew that these two were extremely popular and by the way the votes had been going all day, you'd think they would have had some contingency plan in place to account for a close vote and needing time to count them.
But no. We had poor Gretel (yeah I said 'poor', it must be very difficult to hold a live programme together when all is falling to pieces around you) trying to "dog paddle" as Travis so eloquently put it, stalling for time and forcing us to listen to yet more gibberish from past HM's and view yet more "packages" of HM footage while we waited for a result.
On the voting itself, I think it's high time Legion made documents available to the public after the count is complete. Something official to prove that it's all above board and legal. It would just help to stop a lot of the questions and speculation if we could have some tangible proof that our votes DO count. As it stands we just have to take their word for it and with so much money involved I think we have a right to know how things work and see some tangible evidence of the result.
The whole shambles made the show seem very hashed together, amateur, and in the end anti-climactic. What should have been a big finish, was somewhat of a disappointment after waiting so long and watching the hosts flounder and struggle to keep it together. I realise shit happens and it was LIVE, and I do think everyone did a good job considering, but Big Brother, you have more money than GOD, surely the fans deserved better than what was dished up last night. It was almost a relief when it all ended.
Some stand out moments for me included, but were not limited to;
* Bodie's comment that he's "been drunk half the time" and Gretel trying to cover it up for all the kiddies, that was GOLD. What a loose cannon that dude is, it would have been good viewing to watch him and Michelle in the house together.
* How awkward was the Sussanah and Daniela interviews when Gretski quizzed them about dumping their boyfriends! hahaha! Trainwreck TV right there.
* Laura's glaring absence after writing herself off totally the day before and ending up in "hospital" after resisting arrest! That girl can not hold her grog. Clearly.
*What was Thomas wearing??? He looked like he borrowed my dad's favourite trousers, and then he tucked his shirt into said ugly trousers? Whaaaaaaat? Billy did the same and he looked like a reject from an old Western movie. The belt buckle was so John Wayne. Ewwww.
*I felt so bad for Zach when the crowd booed people who stated they wanted him to win, and felt sorry for him too to see all the HM support Aleisha had. Granted he was only a lowly intruder but it must have felt a little uncomfortable for him, bearing witness to their sour grapes.
* Wasn't it funny watching Zach and Aleisha show their parents around the house. Did it remind anyone else of open day at school when your parents went to your classroom and you showed them your desk and your art and shit? lolzz.
In summing up, I think the finale was yet more evidence that things desperately need to change next year. From the housemates, to the tasks, to FNL, to the food, to the general way things are done and even the way the house looks. We need something fresh, we need a revamp and we need to have confidence in the show once again.
A good start would be bringing back uncut, and moving the show to a later time slot in general. Seeing only a sanitised version of the HM's doesn't give us the clear picture, and as someone with insider connections was telling me last night, there was a lot of footage that might have changed our minds about some of the hm's. He's also convinced that Aleisha and Billy had some kind of sexual activity in the house as well as claiming that Andrew and Hayley had sex in the rewards room! I'm not saying we need to see that kind of stuff, in fact if it's Haydrew bumping uglies, I'd rather not,but it's another dimension of the HM's that we aren't being party too.
Gretel announced last night that BB will definitely be back next year, so I'm desperately hoping that the show will go back to it's roots and chose the type of HM's that will breathe new life into the concept, after all, at the end of the day no amount of plot twists can make up for dull housemates.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who've read my badly worded gibberish, especially the darling few who took the time to leave me a comment or two. It means a lot to know people appreciate this crap :)
I'd like to thank BBBA for all the scoops and debate. At times it can seem like a negative place but that's because we're mostly hardcore fans who truly, dearly, want to see a quality tv show and to see BB become all it can be. Thanks especially to the fan diary people and to Tim for linking to this blog on the home page, it brought many visitors my way.
Lastly, I want to thank my fabulous "insider". This person really made BB interesting for me and let me in on the ground floor with many scoops that I posted in the forums. Here's proof that he/she does exist- It's their BB invite to the after party and staff party. How cool is THAT! He/she surely has the best job in the world. This person has given me some after party pics that I will post later in the week.
I don't know if I'll put myself through this again next year, but if I do, I hope you all come along for the ride too.
It's been fun!
Thanks for reading, and don't forget to turn the lights out as you leave. ;)
Love
Steph

thank YOU Steph for keeping us informed with your witty comments!!
PLEASE audition for BB08!! You would rock as a housemate!
"The whole show seemed to be aimed squarely at an 8-14 year old demographic and I can't for the life of me understand why."
Sadly, I think that young teens are exactly Big Brother's target demographic. That's certainly who most of their advertising seems to be aimed at, and I suspect that is indeed where a large proportion of the voting comes from too.
The great thing about Big Brother used to be that it maintained a balance: it satisfied the teens its sponsors are targeting, while also offering entertainment and insight for the rest of us. Sadly that balance has been lost.
As you say, it's partly due to the loss of more adult-oriented shows like Uncut, but it's also a decline in the whole tone of the show, most importantly in the selection of Housemates.
Those were the error messages I was getting late on Sunday night when trying to a)save Zach and b) evict Aleisha- the voting lines are now offline, watch the daily show for information about when lines are opened.
I'd like to think that if my few votes made it through, Zach would have won... but that would be dreaming :)
I really wish there was voting transparancy too- Gretski said at one point that there were less than 500 votes in it... now, I work with stats (a lot). Even if you take into account that there was probably a bit of dramatic license in the graph, assuming 500 votes difference would suggest that, to get a 2% difference in scores, 25,000 votes were registered. Which is nowhere NEAR the 'hundreds of thousands' of votes she was touting.
I want the numbers, damnit! I want to know how much more I needed to spend.
But I'm not gutted that Aleisha won :)
Thanks for keeping me up to date and more entertained than when I actually watch the show.
Actually, I'm not done. I lived in the UK during their 2005 series. They have a MUCH better format. 9pm weeknights, for an hour each night. There was no uncut, but due to the time slot, you saw a lot more of the housemates than you do in our 7pm slot. It worked heaps better.
BB, you reading this? Consider moving it to a later slot, daily. I know this might clash with the various versions of Law and Order C10 shows, but it could make all the difference.
Thanks again Steph!
I felt sorry that so many HM's ignored Zach on the back of the truck rushing past him to Aleisha. It was only when Gretel introduced them that they even bothered to acknowledge him. Ok, so he wasnt' part of the original mix, but that's no reason to be fucking rude.
The reality is he's still there, and you were voted out.
I fucking hate Bodie.
I'm going to miss reading this blog Steph. Thanks for
a) keeping us interested in BB07 even when it looked (and was) close to death
b) making us laugh regularly, sometimes so much so that I was considering putting on a "Depends" before reading you
c) giving me some clanger sayings that i've learnt to slot into daily conversation
It's been a great ride! I look forward to BB08 - hopefully with you as a housemate, so I hope you've got a good substitute "In the Diary Room" writer.
This blog was the most interesting part of BB this year. I'm glad Aleisha won over Zach, so at least we can finish here disagreeing on one last point. ;)
Yeah, Steph, thanks for keeping us all entertained, even if the housemates didn't necessarily do the same. I'm envious of your insider information...
I said to myself last night that you should audition for BB, you'd shit all over everyone and you'd have a huge advantage - all of us who read your blog(s) would wear out our thumbs voting for you!
Thanks again Steph.
*hands Steph huge bunch of flowers and bottle of Kristal*
Mwah, mwah and mwah!
Thank you Steph for the perfect BB commentary; enough intelligent insight to keep things real and interesting, without the smothering cynicism that leaves you thinking 'why bother'...
I started watching BB this year despite myself, and you single handedly made it worthwhile. Thank Christ for Much Ado, adapting to life with no BB and no Steph would have been more than I want to contemplate.
Yayyyyy, I loved the show last night, even tho it went overtime and all...what a spectacular event. I loved them both...good on Aleshia...I still love Zach!!
:(
I think your blog shutting up shop (for only a year hopefully) is sadder than the show ending.
Here, here yummy mummy, PLEASE audition Steph! xx
If you were attempting to keep the gender of your 'insider' secret by referring to her as 'He/She' and 'This person', you kinda stuffed up by saying you 'love her dearly' earlier in the post. So it's a chick huh...hmmm ;)
Great post Steph, looking forward to the afterparty photos.
Like many others, I received an SMS (sent at around midnight)informing me that "the voting period is now offline". The final sms vote I sent was about 30 minutes before the lines were to close.
I really think BB & legion owe users some kind of explanation for this.
thanks steph. I'm so glad someone was obsessed enough with the show to start a blog about it <3<3 I have enjoyed every entry.
Zach was robbed I dare say but if he had to lose out of any one of the final few housemates we could have done worse than Aleisha. Girlfriend has enough money to go buy a clue now (okay that was mean).
The final show was excruciatingly slow. I actually felt bad for Gretel having to host such a badly organised piece of crap.
The panto was abysmal. I was cringing with embarrassment for the housemates. It was soo sooo bad.
As for seeing all of the housemates again. Well it reminded me of how much I hated them all. WHY HASN'T SOMEONE STABBED BODIE YET? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? ugh.
I too was devastated that it wasnt our beloved Zach but at least it was a girl and not our usual Ozzie ocker type.... With this outcome and Michelles popularity maybe they WILL put in interesting people next year?
I myself want to see Steph in there.....
Thanks for great recaps DQ. XXXX
WTF was Thomas wearing - I almost pitied him in those hideous pants.
Thanks heaps for your time and your updates. I'm with YM - Audition!
No, thank you for updating all of the interesting stuff that they missed out.
It's been awesome.
(And let's just say I'm glad I'll be gone from my current job when they see my work mobile bill from all the sms votes I sent in. It's going to be cool :))
Highlight for me was Bodie throwing a pantomime prop and it hitting Gretel in the head - hard! Hahaha. Hate the guy, but how funny. Props to Gretel for handling it so well, too.
Thanks for the entertaining posts Steph! Agree with yummy mummy, you should so audition, you'd be fantastic :)
What a bullshit finale that was! Something very dodgy with those votes... I never received a confirmation message after the 20 votes I sent. Fuckers.
I would like to echo everyone else's comments and say thank you for this blog, it has provided me with much entertainment over the series.. unlike the show itself. :D
Thanks so much for your blog and the extras you get added :)
First time i had been here, and am gonna keep coming.I totally agree with you saying we are hard core fans and that we only complain for the good of the show.
xxxxx
Yummymummy, Thanks hun! I don't think I'll audition though, can you imagine what would happen to my blogs??? All manner of freaks would flame me and TSSH would go postal on my arse, probably launching a massive campaign to have me evicted the first week! Oh the horror ;)
MindlessMunkey, Now there's a blast from the past! Nice to read ya gorgeous. I really hope they do change the timeslot and the focus of the show next year. Fingers crossed.
Amanda, You're right, the UK version shits all over ours, and as much as we try to copy them we just don't seem to get it right.
MissSmack, wasn't that just awful! I felt so bad for him.
b, You'll have to come over and play on Much Ado, I could change your whole vocabulary!! ;)
Javatari, It wouldn't be YOU if you weren't still trying to wind me up. *smack*
jacob, Aww thanks babe. I hope all's well with you now. Why don't YOU audition? ;)
Mizanthrop, I like you. You can come over any time :P
cazzie, do you ever have a bad word to say about anybody??? I wish I could be like that.
Lala, Noooo I don't think so. Too many skeletons and vicious ex boyfriends would come out of the closet. Haaaaaahaha.
Anon, Please forgive me as I'm a bit retarded. I have fixed it now though, so there! ;)
Blaze, had a rethink on the after party photos. They were taken from a camera phone and you can't really tell who's who or what's what, so I'm gonna leave it. Sorry.
m, The only good thing Bodie did was whack Gretel on the head with a plastic chook. GOLD.
Tempest, You're welcome my sweet. I'll audition if YOU do ;)
Linda, Thomas looked four shades of wrong. What a knob.
Lucy, You moving on AGAIN? Good for you. I feel the urge myself but don't have the balls to do it.
Zoe, How funny was THAT? Can you imagine how furious she would have been.
Amy, Thank you so much. It was fun.
Anon, We wouldn't whinge if we didn't care!! lol, that's my story anyway.
Why don't YOU audition?
Ahh, noes! I'm terrified of job interviews, let alone the whole BB process.
"I don't think I'll audition though, can you imagine what would happen to my blogs??? All manner of freaks would flame me and TSSH would go postal on my arse, probably launching a massive campaign to have me evicted the first week! Oh the horror ;)"
A rehash of "the" poem perhaps? ;-)
[and TSSH is dead as these days..]
"Tempest, You're welcome my sweet. I'll audition if YOU do ;)"
You're on... I'll fly up to sydney and if we dont get through you can come down to melbourne!
Jacob, awww c'mon! You're too cute for words!
Tempest, You're insane. That's why I heart you so xx
Stephers, it makes me sad (even though I totally hadnt made it here for the last two weeks) that this year has come to an end. Your blog, not BB.
The phantomine was fucking AWFUL. Not like the big music (tap dancing) numbers of last year.
Shit, I cant think what else I wanted to say. Cept thank you.
